Marine Incident Preparedness and Response for BC First Nations

Nuka Research has supported a multi-year project to support the implementation of the Reconciliation Framework Agreement for Oceans Governance and Management on behalf of British Columbia First Nations.  We have provided technical support to First Nations from Haida Gwaii, the North Coast, the Central Coast, and North Vancouver Island to develop First Nations marine response and capacity development plans and to support collaborative planning with Canada and the Province of BC to create a framework for marine incident preparedness and response coordination.  Our role in this project spans meeting facilitation, technical support to working groups, and drafting plans and templates to support First Nations capacity building for marine environmental emergencies, including oil spills.  We have spent time in communities working with leadership, technical staff, and Coastal Guardian Watchmen and have delivered training on marine oil spill response planning and implementation.
