Northern Shelf Bioregion First Nations Notification Pilot Project and Tabletop Exercise

In 2021-2022, Nuka Research led a process to design, plan, implement, evaluate, and report on a virtual Tabletop Exercise (TTX) to support the development of an enhanced Notification technology, aiming to improve the timeliness and accuracy of marine incident notifications to BC First Nations communities. This project, funded by the British Columbia Ministry of Environment Environmental Emergencies Branch, brought together Indigenous governments, Canadian federal agencies, and BC Provincial emergency management agencies to assess needs and gaps in the current oil spill notification systems to inform a pilot project evaluating novel technological solutions for notifying First Nations when an oil spill occurs. This work resulted in the adoption of PEASI’s Alertable application to enhance spill notification of BC First Nations based on subscriber-identified preferences.
