Nuka Research was contracted by the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council (CIRCAC) to compile information on vessel traffic in Cook Inlet, building on analyses from 2010 and 2011-2020. Using 2021-2024 Automatic Identification System (AIS) data from the Marine Exchange of Alaska, the study identified 747 vessels operating in the Inlet. Fishing vessels made up the largest share (38%), while tugs accounted for the most time spent in the Inlet. Using maps, statistics, and counts of vessels entering selected ports and crossing through different parts of the Inlet, this study leverages a growing number of years of AIS data, which has made it increasingly possible to understand vessel traffic.
