Nuka Research was contracted by the Prince William Sound Regional Citizens’ Advisory Council to facilitate a workshop in the City of Valdez, Alaska. Held in June 2024, the workshop brought together over 40 experts from various fields, including geologic hazards, landslides, tsunami modeling, vessel operations, and on-water emergency response to address the risks posed by geological hazards and tsunamis to vessels in the region, and review vessel operator guidance. Representing local, state, and federal agencies, private operators, and academic institutions, participants shared valuable insights into how tsunamis impact harbor and maritime safety. The workshop emphasized the importance of enhancing education for both professional mariners and recreational boaters, and discussed strategies for improving awareness, communication, and time-sensitive alerts to help mitigate risks during a tsunami event. A summary report synthesizing the key takeaways, research needs, and actionable recommendations for vessel operators was produced to guide future efforts in safeguarding vessels, crew, and passengers in areas vulnerable to such an event.
